Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these medications must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
